A digital inclinometer for ships (an electronic inclinometer) measures roll and pitch with a sensor, shows them as numbers and keeps a record. More ship operators are replacing pendulum inclinometers with digital ones, so here is what to know before you choose one. For product specifications, see our marine digital inclinometer IM330.
1. Digital vs pendulum inclinometers
- Reading: a pendulum type is read by eye on a scale; a digital inclinometer shows sensor values as numbers.
- Records: a digital inclinometer keeps dated readings, so the vessel's attitude can be reviewed after a passage or cargo work.
- Display: roll and pitch shown together make vessel motion easy to grasp at a glance.
2. What to check when choosing an electronic inclinometer
- Measurements: roll only, or roll and pitch together.
- Logging and playback: whether readings are recorded and can be replayed on the bridge.
- Display visibility: readable at night and in bright daylight, with both values visible at once.
- Shipboard conditions: a sensor that stays stable under vibration, shock and temperature changes.
For an example with simultaneous roll and pitch measurement and dated logging, see the specifications of our electronic ship inclinometer IM330.
3. Where and how to install
- Fix the sensor level on a rigid structure so it reflects the hull's inclination accurately.
- Place the display on the bridge console where the watchkeeper can always see it.
- After installation, check the zero point with the vessel upright and confirm the display matches the actual inclination.
4. How it is used
- Cargo work: see at once whether the vessel is listing during loading or discharging, as a reference for adjusting the sequence.
- Heavy weather: follow rolling and pitching as numbers when they grow.
- Review: replay recorded values to check the vessel's attitude at the time and support reports.
5. Checklist before installation
- Measurements needed (roll, pitch) and logging
- Sensor and display locations, power and cable routes
- Zero-point check after installation and an inspection schedule
